In the quiet moments between alerting and protecting, she’s just a curly-haired companion with soulful eyes, But when duty calls, Penny the Lagotto Romagnolo transforms into something extraordinary – a vigilant guardian whose keen nose stands between a young boy and potential danger.
Penny’s journey into the family began when Candace’s world was upended following her son’s peanut allergy diagnosis at just 10 months old. That moment marked the beginning of a new reality filled with constant vigilance, label-reading, educating family and friends, and the ever present worry that accompanies severe food allergies.
While adapting to this new normal, Candace discovered an approach within the food allergy community – specially trained service dogs whose remarkable odor detection abilities could identify hidden allergens. After thorough research and careful consideration, Penny joined the family. Bringing with her not only her specialized training, but also her gentle spirit.

As a Food Allergen Detection dog, Penny’s finely tuned senses can detect trace amounts of a variety of nuts in environments where visual inspection may fail. She works diligently to provide an additional layer of protection. Her abilities offer the family added support in navigating daily life, complementing their existing safety protocols.
